Websites 101
To setup a stand-alone website you’ll need to purchase a domain name, purchase web server hosting, and set up all of the related details and icky stuff involved. Some companies offer both domain name and hosting packages at reduced rates when purchased at the same time, so look for discounts if you’re thinking of purchasing both domain name and web hosting together.
Also, it’s a good idea to buy your domain name and web hosting together for a simple reason such as the billing cycle. Having the yearly billing date for both domain name and hosting near the same date helps out when early expiration of one or the other licenses may keep your site from appearing online.
Domain Names
A domain name is any online web address, like www.URL.com for example. They are purchased, or actually rented, yearly from online retailers or registrars. Most domains are now less than $10 per year, so don’t pay more than that unless it’s really important for you to acquire a fancy or premium domain name.
Warning! When purchasing a domain name, you’ll likely be prompted to buy additional products and features, so watch carefully as you’re clicking through the checkout process. Companies will bombard you like crazy trying to add on a bunch of things you don’t need.
Web Hosting
A web host or web server is an online provider who basically “rents” out space for your website to live. Web hosting can usually be purchased in monthly or yearly blocks, but it’s usually most efficient and a good idea to purchase a full year of hosting since domain names can only be purchased annually.
Obviously there are thousands of web hosting companies offering many different hosting packages at many different price levels… So, which one is the right one for you? A lot of the time, as the saying goes — you get what you pay for when it comes to hosting. Budget hosts are often criticized for their inferior quality and performance, so look for something that fits your budget but don’t cheat yourself out of features or quality technical support.
Support
Some companies offer little or no support when it comes to building or hosting your website. Remember to find a company that will nurture your project rather than abandon it once you’ve paid the bill. As always, Expand will work with you to meet your growing goals. We can setup the entire website domain and hosting for you with no headache or hassle whatsoever… just drop us a line.
